Yes! Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is here to give wings to your dreams. It is a national level scholarship/fellowship program that is conducted by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. In the year 1999, this program was introduced to raise the spirits of the students of science background and motivate them to pursue a career in research. To add on, the entire responsibility of administering the KVPY program has been entrusted upon the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

 
Eligibility criteria for KVPY 

 

  • Stream SA- This stream includes the students who are enrolled in class 11th having a science stream in the current academic year. It is important for them to have secured a minimum of 75 percent marks in aggregate in two subjects i.e. Mathematics and Science in their class 10th. With this, it is significant to note that the fellowship of these students will only be activated only if they take the science stream in their graduation.  If all these pre-requisites are met, a student is eligible for the aptitude test. 
  • Stream SX- This includes students who are presently in class 12th and pursuing studies in science subjects. They should also have secured a minimum of 75 percent marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science in class 10th to be eligible for the aptitude test. Also, these students must be interested to take up only science subjects in their graduation to avail the benefits of the KVPY fellowship program. 
  • Stream SB- It includes the students who are in their first year of graduation and are pursuing their education in the stream of basic science subjects. These students must have attained at least 60 percent of marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science in class 12th in order to be eligible for the aptitude test. 

Know about the exam pattern of KVPY


There are two rounds in KVPY namely Aptitude Test that evaluates the aspirant’s knowledge of various subjects; and Personal Interview that is conducted to assess the knowledge of science and other research associated themes. The students can take this test online following an easy process of filling an application form. The questions include multiple-choice questions and students are given 3 hours to complete it. One can choose either English or Hindi to attempt the exam, whichever is more comfortable. 


Fees and fellowship 
The KVPY fee for the General and OBC category is INR 1000 while for SC/ST/PWD, it is INR 500 only. 
When it comes to the rewards of the KYPY fellowship program, they are highly appealing. The students of SA/SX/SB stream in their first to third years of graduation will receive a monthly fellowship of INR 5,000 with the annual contingency grant being INR 20,000. On the other hand, students of SA/SX/SB stream in their integrated post-graduation courses will receive an amount of INR 7,000 as monthly fellowship and INR 28,000 being the annual contingency grant.  So, you see that your knowledge and efforts are sure to give you the best returns for a lifetime.
